    Assam Human Rights Commission issues notice to govt over Covid situation in Guwahati jail

    ​​ The AHRC has taken cognizance of a complaint made by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia regarding gross negligence in providing necessary healthcare and diet to the inmates of Guwahati Central Jail and other jails of Assam.

    Guwahati: Following a complaint, Assam Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the chief secretary and the IGP (Prisons) to submit a report regarding allegations of non compliance of covid-19 Protocol in Guwahati central jail.

    Several inmates in the jail have tested positive for the virus.

    The AHRC has taken cognizance of a complaint made by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia regarding gross negligence in providing necessary healthcare and diet to the inmates of Guwahati Central Jail and other jails of Assam, along with general non-compliance with Covid-19 protocol, and has ordered the Chief Secretary of Assam and the IGP (Prisons) to submit a report in this connection to the Commission on or before 5th August.

    The order was passed by Justice T. Vaiphei, Chairperson of the Commission, and Members Naba Kamal Bora and Deva Kumar Saikia.

    Saikia had lodged his complaint vide letter dated July 14, 2020.
