Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced big-ticket spending on roads and metro rail system in Tamil Nadu as the southern state is gearing up to face Assembly polls in summer.

Tamil Nadu has got 3,500 kilometre more of national highways at a cost of Rs 1.03 lakh crore. Sitharaman spoke of new economic corridors being planned to boost roads in the state with the Madurai-Kollam corridor and the Chittoor–Thatchur corridor. Construction on these corridors will be started next year, she said.

The Chennai Metro Rail project too found a mention in the Budget with the Finance Minister allocating Rs 63,246 crore towards Phase II of the project. Another noteworthy mention of the State capital came when the Finance Minister spoke of the establishment of five major fishing harbours. One of the harbours is to be in Chennai in order to facilitate it becoming an economic hub in the fishing sector.

The BJP has tied up with the ruling AIADMK, and its immediate priority has been to expand its clout in the state dominated by the two Dravidian parties so that it can mop up some seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The AIADMK finds itself firefighting anti-incumbency and now has to deal with twists and turns in the party as the late leader J Jayalalithaa's close aide VK Sasikala is set to get active in the state politics. Sasikala was discharged from a Bengaluru hospital on Sunday and got into a car bearing the AIADMK flag, something that analysts believed was a clear indication of tough times ahead for the AIADMK, as the current Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was propped up by Sasikala herself.
