KOLKATA: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and former Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will address a joint campaign rally on Wednesday. This is for the first time that Gandhi will be sharing a common platform with a top CPI (M) leader to campaign for Congress and Left Front candidates facing polls during the fifth and last phase of elections to be held on April 30 and May 5.The joint campaign rally will be organised at Park Circus Maidan and both CPIM and Congress camps are upbeat with the joint campaign before the last two rounds of polls.

Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that "Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will be present at Rahul Gandhi's Park Circus rally on Wednesday. Rabin Deb of the CPI(M) will attend Sonia Gandhi's rally at Serampore in Hooghly district on Tuesday."

Interestingly, chief minister Mamata Banerjee's assembly constituency of Bhowanipore will also go for polls on April 30 and the Congress has fielded former Union minister Deepa Dasmunshi with support from CPI(M) to take on the chief minister. Both CPI(M) and Congress camps here feel that the joint meeting by Gandhi and Bhattacharjee just three days before Bhowanipore polls will have a tremendous impact on the electors and any confusion over CIM-Congress alliance, which the ruling Trinamool Congress is trying to create, will be over after the joint rally by the two key party leaders.

Meanwhile, CPIM polit bureau member and state party secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra claimed on Monday after completion of fourth phase of polls that the Congress-CPIM combine was heading for forming government. "The combine is targeting 200 of the total 294 seats in state Assembly and the trends of polling indicates that the combine will be able to form the government."

Mamata Banerjee on the other hand, claimed on Monday that her party will remain in power after the assembly elections. She also raised questions about certain moves by the Election Commission, which on Monday played an effective role in holding a free and fair polls.
