Oh My God! How curbs on religious events spelt doom for small businesses

    Synopsis

The pandemic led to pilgrimages getting cancelled, muted celebration of religious festivals and places of worship being in the wait and watch mode. For many small businesses, this is a test of their faith.

Nilesh Sanklecha’s shop is right at God’s doorstep, and he has now left its fate to the deity.Located just opposite the Dwarkamai Temple in Shirdi, Dwarkamai Stores, which sells religious souvenirs, accessories and devotional offerings, wears a deserted look these days. With the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple shut since April due to the spike in Covid cases in Maharashtra, the frenzy that usually accompanies the rush of devotees is being sorely missed.
