    Transporting steel from Rotterdam to Mumbai is cheaper than from Jamshedpur

    The Indian Railways are a lifeline of the country’s steel industry. But factories cannot rely on this mode alone if they want to stay competitive.

    It is cheaper to move steel from Rotterdam to Mumbai than from Jamshedpur to the financial capital of India. The freight cost from landlocked Jamshedpur to Mumbai — some 1,700 km apart — can be as high as $50 a tonne, against just $34 a tonne from Rotterdam to Mumbai — some 6,800 km apart, according to a NITI Aayog report. India's steelmakers faced a relative cost disadvantage of $20-25 per tonne of finished steel because transportation costs
