"From Cantonese to Qʼeqchiʼ, these new languages represent more than 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8% of the world’s population. Some are major world languages with over 100 million speakers," Isaac Caswell, senior software engineer at Google Translate, explained in a blog post.

Google also supports some of the languages spoken by Indigenous communities, a few of whom have almost no native speakers but active revitalisation efforts.

Some new languages include Punjabi, written in the Shahmukhi script, the most spoken language in Pakistan.

Languages come in different shapes and forms depending on regions, dialects and spelling standards, and Google said it picks the most commonly used varieties of each language it adds.

The company used PaLM 2 to learn languages closely related to each other. For example, Awadhi and Marwadi have close relations to Hindi.

Google has been advancing its artificial intelligence efforts, integrating its chatbot Gemini into its products, to compete with Meta AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT, among other rivals. On June 18, Google launched a mobile app for Gemini in India, supporting nine local languages. Meta on June 24 announced the availability of its AI assistant 'Meta AI' in India on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and meta.ai portal.
