It was during this tour that Dhyan Chand established himself as the premier star of Indian hockey. For Chand, an enlisted sepoy in the Army and a man not born into privilege, the opportunity to represent India was an unexpected windfall.

The 58-year-old Usha, a multiple Asian Games gold medallist and fourth place finisher in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles final, was declared elected unopposed for the top post in the polls.
