Supreme Court to decide fate of Mifepristone: A deep dive into Texas abortion medication lawsuit

At the center of the Texas medication abortion lawsuit lies mifepristone, a drug developed by Danco Laboratories, embroiled in a contentious legal battle that has the potential to shape the future of abortion access in the United States.

US Supreme Court preserves access to abortion pill

The US Supreme Court has preserved access to the abortion pill mifepristone, which is used in over half of US abortions, by freezing rulings by lower courts that would have banned or severely limited access. An appeals court had already imposed strict access limits after a US District Court judge had initially ruled to ban mifepristone, which had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000.

US Supreme Court extends access to abortion pill to Friday

The Biden administration and New York-based Danco Laboratories, the maker of the drug, want the nation's highest court to reject limits on mifepristone's use imposed by lower courts, at least as long as the legal case makes it way through the courts. They say women who want the drug and providers who dispense it will face chaos if limits on the drug take effect. Depending on what the justices decide, that could include requiring women to take a higher dosage of the drug than the FDA says is necessary.

US Supreme Court hits pause on abortion pill ban

The nation's highest court issued an "administrative stay" freezing the rulings until Wednesday to allow for parties to submit their arguments to the tribunal -- scene of the latest battleground in America's war over reproductive rights. The move came after the Justice Department filed an emergency appeal asking the Supreme Court to block the lower court rulings that would have banned or limited access to the drug mifepristone.

US judge suspends approval of mifepristone in latest abortion setback

Kacsmaryk's ruling is a preliminary injunction that would essentially ban sales of mifepristone while the case by anti-abortion groups before him continues. The judge, who was appointed to the bench by Republican President Donald Trump, has not yet made a final ruling on the merits of the challenge. However, in his ruling he found that the lawsuit is substantially likely to succeed. He said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had ignored risks in approving the drug.

New US rule on abortion pills decoded

The first (mifepristone) blocks the pregnancy, and the second (misoprostol) provokes bleeding to empty the uterus. The biggest issues surround mifepristone, which has been authorized and tightly regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2000. The FDA has approved mifepristone to be used through the 10th week of pregnancy.
