    Pharma industry seeks relief from price cap rule for cheap drugs

    Nutraceuticals may get cheaper as panel looks to regulate prices

    The Indian government is contemplating bringing nutraceuticals under price control to enhance affordability for consumers. Currently regulated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) without price controls, these products, often marketed as over-the-counter health supplements, face scrutiny for high pricing. Officials argue that some companies charge exorbitant prices by repackaging pharmaceutical ingredients into nutraceuticals. A committee involving various health and regulatory bodies aims to introduce pricing regulations to curb this trend and ensure fair pricing.

The committee will evaluate the availability and pricing of essential medicines, balance price and availability, and consider institutional reforms within the NPPA. The scheme covers pharmaceutical units with a turnover of less than Rs 500 crore for the last three years, offering incentives of up to Rs 1 crore.

      All medical devices will have to bear details like retail price, country of origin, size and dimensions and consumer care details on the package so that consumers can make an informed decision, the department of consumer affairs has said.

      In case of Fixed dose combinations (FDC) where one component is going off patent the ceiling price will be revised by reducing the present ceiling price by 50%, it further said. According to the notification, "the retail price of the new drug shall be arrived at by reducing fifty percent," it said. The Centre and the pharma industry had been working on a pricing mechanism for drugs that are going off patent for a year now.
