The three-day annual general body meeting of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) began here on Sunday, with the organisation paying homage to political leaders and noted personalities who died in the last one year.

      Addressing a press conference ahead of the meeting, RSS prachar pramukh head Sunil Ambekar said the meeting will discuss the points raised by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in his annual address on vijayadashami. Bhagwat had flagged the need for a population policy that takes into account "stabilising population growth" .

      He was delivering his annual Vijayadashami speech outlining the RSS' vision for the coming year, and comes close on the heels of his meeting with intellectuals from the Muslim community. Bhagwat said such inter-faith meetings have been part of the Sangh tradition and the intent is to ensure, "we have to remain one. We all have to be Bharat. Samaj and rashtriyata should be our only interests."

      “The Sangh has already passed a proposal keeping an eye on the future of the nation in the next 50 years. This nation needs a policy for a longer period for population control. We advocate a national population control policy,” RSS joint general secretary Manmohan Vaidya said at a press conference on Monday.

The meeting will be attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and the BJP's secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, among others. It will see presentations by different RSS-affiliated organisations, including BJP.

      RSS leaders mull ways to get more people to daily shakhas

      "We feel that in gated communities, families often living away from their relatives feel the need for more engagement. They lead isolated lives. We started an experimental initiative some years ago. We had IT milans (get-togethers). Now, we want to expand that, hold monthly and weekly shakhas," an RSS functionary said.

      Three-day meet of RSS top body from Thursday

      ​BJP national organisation secretary BL Santhosh is also expected to take part in the meeting starting Thursday, that will see the participation of top RSS leaders including sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and Sarkayavah Dattatreya Hosabale.
