    Narendra Dabholkar murder case: Pune special court acquits three, sentences two to life

    Narendra Dabholkar was shot dead while on a morning walk on Omkareshwar Bridge, as the accused were opposed to his crusade against superstition, the prosecution said in its final arguments. ​Additional sessions judge A A Jadhav of the special court for cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) sentenced Sachin Andhure and Sharad Kalaskar to life imprisonment after hearing from over 20 witnesses.

    SC overrules Bombay HC on jurisdiction of special courts in bankruptcy cases

    The Supreme Court has clarified that special courts presided by a sessions or additional sessions judge can try complaints under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016. The court set aside a Bombay High Court's decision that only special courts consisting of a metropolitan or judicial magistrate (JM) were empowered to hear complaints under the bankruptcy law.

    The Delhi Police filed a chargesheet on Saturday in connection with a case lodged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against news portal NewsClick, which is accused of receiving a huge amount of money to peddle pro-China propaganda through its stories, sources said on Saturday. The chargesheet runs into several thousand pages.

      The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the UCC report, marking the fulfillment of a major promise made by the BJP before the Assembly polls.       The Enforcement Directorate opposed Supertech Group's chairman R K Arora's plea for interim bail on medical grounds in a money laundering case. They argued that the necessary medical assistance was available in prison, countering Arora's claim of deteriorating health. The case, stemming from FIRs in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, alleges a scam involving 670 home buyers, defrauded of Rs 164 crore. The ED claims misappropriation of funds and diversion for land acquisition, rendering substantial loans non-performing assets.

      Parliament Security breach case: Delhi Police moves Court seeking permission to conduct polygraph tests of accused

      The Special Cell of Delhi Police has requested permission from the Patiala House Court to conduct a polygraph test on all accused arrested in the Parliament Security Breach Case. The court adjourned the matter to January 2, 2024, citing the absence of legal aid counsel for some accused. The security breach occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack.

      The Delhi Police today produced the four arrested accused before the court on expiry of their seven-day police custody. The accused- Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma, Amol Dhanraj Shinde and Neelam Devi - were produced before Special Judge Hardeep Kaur.

      According to sources, the accused will be taken to the Parliament to recreate the scene of the crime. This will help the police to find out how the accused entered the Parliament building with colour spray and how they executed their plan, sources from the Special Cell said.

      Police said they are investigating the motive and conspiracy behind the incident and plan to cross-examine all the accused to unravel the plot. All six were using 'Signal' chat app to avoid any suspicion and Karnataka-based Manoranjan D is believed to have motivated the other suspects to participate in the act. He used to frequently travel to New Delhi and Bengaluru for meetings. He was the one who recced Parliament twice -- first during the monsoon session and then the special session of Parliament in September, police said.

      Special public prosecutor Amit Prasad submitted that there is some ambiguity on the provision mentioned by the defence counsel on the point that whether the accused under UAPA with multiple offences and undergone half of the sentence under UAPA, is entitled to be released on bail under section 436A CrPC. Advocate Talib Mustafa opposed the submissions made by the SPP for Delhi Police. He argued that what the SPP is submitting is related to post-conviction cases. Whereas Sharjeel is un undertrial.       City court dismisses DMK Minister Senthil Balaji's bail plea

      A sessions court in Chennai dismissed the bail petition of DMK Minister V Senthil Balaji on Wednesday. Balaji was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in June in connection with a money laundering case. "Considering the gravity of offence, overwhelming materials against the petitioner, the status of the petitioner and the fact that the petitioner has not satisfied the twin conditions of Section 45 of the PMLA, this court does not find reasonable grounds for believing that the petitioner was not guilty of the offence or that he is not likely to commit any offence while on bail and taking overall view of the matter, the court is not inclined to grant bail to the petitioner on merits and also on medical grounds", the judge added.
