At least 39 people killed in Israeli strikes across northern Gaza, officials say

Israeli airstrikes killed at least 39 people in northern Gaza on Saturday, with rescue workers searching for survivors. Fadel Naem, director of al-Ahli Hospital, reported receiving over three dozen bodies. The Palestinian Civil Defense dug through rubble in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp, uncovering dozens of bodies. Israel confirmed strikes on two Hamas military sites in Gaza City. This follows recent deadly strikes near Rafah, worsening the humanitarian crisis. Additionally, an Israeli strike in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley killed an al-Jamaa al-Islamiya member. The Israel-Hamas conflict has claimed thousands of lives since October 7.

Russian forces kill Islamic State-linked hostage takers at detention centre

State media said that some of the men had been convicted of terrorism offences and were accused of affiliation with the Islamic State militant group, which claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall in March. The six hostage takers, one of whom wore a headband with the flag used by the Islamic State that bears an Arabic inscription, knocked out window bars and climbed down several floors by rope before taking the guards hostage with a knife and fire axe.

Iran president to visit Pakistan, boost ties: Islamabad

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi will travel to Islamabad on Monday to meet his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan's foreign ministry said, as the two countries seek to mend ties following deadly cross-border attacks this year. Raisi will be accompanied by "a high-level delegation comprising the foreign minister... as well as a large business delegation," the foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Iraq's deputy prime minister, in US meeting, calls for regional restraint

Iraq has called for restraint amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, as talks on the complex U.S.-Iraq relationship begin in Washington. Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Tamim co-chaired a meeting of the U.S.-Iraq Higher Coordinating Committee with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Iraq is concerned about its region being "dragged into a wider war that will threaten international security and safety."

How ISIS-K leader forged one of Islamic State's most fearsome groups

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for Friday's mass shooting at a concert hall near Moscow that killed at least 137 people. U.S. officials have said they have intelligence indicating it was the Afghan branch, Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K), that was responsible. Washington has said it had warned Russia this month of an imminent attack. A source familiar with this intelligence said it was based on interceptions of "chatter" among ISIS-K militants. Russia's foreign ministry, however, has questioned whether ISIS-K was responsible.

Why Iran is the common link in conflicts from Gaza to Pakistan

The Iran connection stems partly from Iran's decades-long efforts to deter threats and undermine foes by building up like-minded militias across the Middle East. In addition, Iran itself, like neighboring countries, faces armed separatist movements and terrorist groups in conflicts that readily spill over borders.
