Dividend yield & probability of capital gains: The non-classical combination of income from stock market

Stock price and dividend yields have an inverse relationship but before this inverse relationship kicks in there is a level of equilibrium. Now this level of equilibrium is a subjective level which moves according to the level of risk free interest rate which FD provides. But there is another equilibrium level which mathematical equations don't solve. As an investor one buys’ a stock with 4 percent dividend yield stocks what should be his expected return from capital gains or whether he should have it even.

Contrarian investing: 5 smallcap stocks with an upside potential of more than 23%

One big challenge with small cap investing is that as soon as nifty starts to correct, small caps are the first one to feel the heat and crack. But using some parameters may help in avoiding the possible mistakes. ET screener powered by Refinitiv’s Stock Report Plus lists down stocks from small cap space with high upside potential of more than 20% over the next 12 months, having an average recommendation rating of “Buy” or "Strong Buy".

Watch list: 5 stocks that balance high dividend yield & possibility of capital gains

Just eight months back, when interest rates on fixed deposits were hovering around 5%, it made sense to own stocks where dividend yield was then 7% . Now with interest rates on FDs hovering above 7%, buying a stock with a 7-8% dividend yield may not appear the best decision. In such conditions, investing in stocks where the dividend yield is not even 5%, would appear to be even worse. But if dividend yield of 4-5% is combined with probability of capital gains, based on long term track record, it is worthwhile to bring that stock on your watch list.
