Telecom infrastructure sharing may spur gear sharing too, experts say
The current scenario could change with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) recommending creating a separate category under the unified license for Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Provider (DCIP) authorisation. "...the proposed DCIP authorisation holder may create both active and passive digital connectivity infrastructure and share it with other TSPs and has to pay no license fee to the government," Trai said in its recommendations last month.

The Indian government has received Rs 2,725 crore investments from 42 applicant companies under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for telecom gear manufacturing, according to Devusinh Chauhan, minister of state for communications. The scheme has generated over 15,500 new jobs and exported products worth Rs 8,804 crore. The PLI scheme was launched in June 2021 and has catalyzed the production of telecom equipment in India.

In the third quarter financial report, Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark said the business continued to benefit from 5G deployments in India, where net sales more than doubled year-on-year, but sales volume moderated significantly on a sequential basis as the pace of deployment has started to normalise. In the list of recommendations on ‘Promoting Networking and Telecom Equipment Manufacturing in India’ released by the sector regulator on Saturday, it has also suggested the introduction of local value addition norms in performance linked incentives scheme (PLI scheme), tax relief as part of fiscal incentives, and setting up a dedicated master fund towards to address the relative cost disability faced by the industry, among others.
