Prioritising India-UK ties, FTA in focus under new PM Keir Starmer

The India-UK FTA talks began in January 2022 but were stalled in the 14th round as both countries stepped into their general election cycles this year. India saw the new government in the first week and on Friday, it was the UK's. India-UK FTA: Keir Starmer's Labour Party is poised to end the 14-year Conservative Party rule in the UK, with Starmer set to become the next Prime Minister. The change in government is expected to have minimal impact on India-UK relations, particularly concerning the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Starmer's manifesto pledges to pursue a "new strategic partnership" with India, focusing on finalizing the FTA, marking a departure from previous Labour Party stances. Despite the anticipated shift, the specific timelines for concluding the FTA remain uncertain.

We do not have the view that this government will go into a lot of freebies because if freebies was the only thing, then BJP should not have won Odisha and then Jagan should not have lost Andhra Pradesh or Chandrababu Naidu should not have been able to win Andhra Pradesh because the maximum freebies were given in that state and minimum freebies were given in Odisha which is even poorer state than Uttar Pradesh in terms of per capita.

In the first trading session post the formation of the new government, it is bulls which can be seen on the street and bears after their one day adventure are sitting on side. If one looks at the composition of the Nifty and sensex, they can be impacted by movement in one or two sectors and that is probably the reason why it is important to de-link with what is happening in nifty and broader market indices. Given the way indices and broader markets have panned out, it is very likely that we are going to soon see the market hitting new highs. But will your portfolio value hit a new high is something which needs to be watched. Just before the start of the final phase of the general elections 2024 was to take place, there was a clear indication that it is bulls who are in control of the market. There are no two opinions, that a continuity in policy making will make the markets move upward very sharply. A glimpse of that will come in Monday’s trading session, when the impact of the exit poll result gets played out. So, with the base case assumption that the policy making will continue, we take things forward but continue with our principle stand that If one is taking fresh exposure to equity, ensure that there is some level of quality as far as the business and fundamentals are concerned. These selected stocks depict a strong upward trajectory in their overall average score which is based on five key pillars i.e. earnings, fundamentals, relative valuation, risk and price momentum.
