Patna High Court stays Bihar govt's caste survey
The Patna High Court has placed a temporary hold on Bihar's enumeration of castes and economic survey after hearing a petition challenging the survey's validity. The court has reserved judgment on the petition filed by Akhilesh Kumar and others. The division bench of Chief Justice KV Chandran heard from both parties as advocates Ritu Raj, Dinu Kumar and Abhinav Srivastava argued that the survey was not within the jurisdiction of the state government.
Setback for Bihar government as Patna High Court stays caste survey
The Bihar government has been ordered to immediately halt its controversial caste survey by the Patna High Court. A division bench directed the state to prevent data from the survey being shared and secured until further notice. The court will next hear the case on 7 July, following a number of petitions that challenged the survey and criticised data integrity and security. The case is seen as an embarrassment for the ruling Nitish Kumar Government, which started the survey in January 2017. BJP and 'social justice' parties have demanded a nationwide caste survey to determine correct OBC entitlement levels in government jobs and institutions.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal in India criticised a recent ruling by Patna High Court ordering the halt of a government-conducted caste survey. The RJD, the largest member of the ruling alliance in Bihar, stated that "[i]nstitutions become an 'obstruction' in matters of social justice," and noted that the state legislature had unanimously backed the survey. The RJD argued that fixing accuracy on caste census would empower marginalised and backward sectors.
