    The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has achieved a significant milestone by receiving its location code, IN NYY 1, from the Indian government on June 21, 2024. Managed by Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), this development was highlighted by Kerala's Ports Minister V N Vasavan in the state Assembly. The port's new code marks its readiness to operate as a major transshipment hub, enhancing logistical capabilities and fostering increased trade and economic activity in the region.

    Adani Group's Vizhinjam Port in Kerala has received approval to operate as India's first transshipment port, facilitating the transfer of cargo between ships. The shipping ministry's nod allows customs to establish an office at the port. The project, started in 2015, aims to tap into India's transshipment cargo, which is currently handled by foreign ports like Colombo. Vizhinjam Port's advanced infrastructure can handle large vessels, with an initial capacity of one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), set to expand in subsequent phases.

    Three more vessels to arrive at Vizhinjam port from China in April

    Three additional vessels from China are scheduled to arrive at the Vizhinjam seaport next month, bringing a total of 17 cranes for the international deep-sea facility being constructed at a cost of Rs 7,700 crore, according to a statement by the Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL). The ships are expected to reach the Vizhinjam coast on April 4th, 17th, and 23rd.

    The State government called for the all-party meeting after a mob vandalised the Vizhinjam police station and attacked and injured around 40 officials. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. A case in this regard was registered today arraigning over 3,000 identifiable people from the region. Police, in the FIR, said around 3,000 people gathered at the station on Sunday to release one accused in a case registered on Saturday and other suspects - Leo Stanley, Muthappan, Pushparaj and Shanki - who were taken into custody.
