Having clinched the silver in the last edition, Punjab lifter Lovepreet finished second best once again in the 109kg weight class after lifting a total of 341kg (154kg+187kg), which was below his 355kg (163kg+192kg) medal-winning effort during the Birmingham Commonwealth Games last year.

Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi lifted 80kg and 83kg in her first two snatch attempts with relative ease but her 85kg try was deemed a no lift. She covered up her underwhelming snatch performance by lifting the second highest weight in clean and jerk to take home the silver in the section.

View: It’s not just about winning medals but also about galvanising Indian society at large

The continued successes in table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, wrestling, women's cricket and boxing, the resilience in squash, continued re-emergence in hockey, and the emerging success in judo, para sports and, now, athletics and even lawn bowls, bodes well. Indian sportspersons are making their presence felt on the international stage, and that is something to celebrate.

Subramanium Raman, table tennis head coach, praised the mixed doubles pair of R Sathiyan and Manika Batra, touting them as medal prospects for Paris 2024. “They are now ranked number 6 and our aim is to get them to the top 4 before Paris. They have a real chance,” said Raman.

CWG 2022: India end weightlifting campaign with 10 medals, Gurdeep Singh wins bronze in Men's 109+ kg

India's total medal count from weightlifting stood at 10 -- three gold, three silver and four bronze -- marginally better than that at Gold Coast in 2018 when India had won only nine medals. Though India won an extra medal at Birmingham, what would rankle the Indian Weightlifting officials and supporters is that India could win only three goal medals from Birmingham as compared to five at Gold Coast.
