ITR filing due date: Will July 31 deadline for filing income tax returns be extended?

With the last date approaching fast, the tag 'Income Tax Return' has started trending on social media platforms. Several people have already asked the Income Tax Department to extend the last date of filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2023-24.

So far, close to four crore income tax returns have been filed as on July 23, 2023. Out of these over 2.12 crore returns have been verified and processed, as per data provided by the Income Tax Department.

Will the Income Tax department extend the deadline for filing income tax return this year? Answering this, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra told PTI earlier this month, "...we would advise them (taxpayers) not to wait to the last moment and also not to hope for any extensions.

"So, I would advise them to file their tax return at the earliest because the deadline of July 31 is approaching fast," he added.
