    I am going to be 40 years old. I have a lumpsum of Rs 25 lakh. I would like to do some investment with guaranteed returns of 14%. I can wait for a period of 10 years. I have been getting some requests from agents to invest in retirement funds.

    Mutual funds do not guarantee any returns. The returns would depend on the performance of their investments. So, if you are looking for guaranteed returns, you should not invest in mutual funds. Also, you have unrealistic return expectations. Most investments that offer guaranteed returns, especially if they are backed by the government, do not offer double-digit returns. Mostly you will get single-digit returns from them.

    If you are ready to take some risk and willing to invest for a period of 10 years, you may consider investing in aggressive hybrid schemes or large cap mutual funds. These schemes have relatively lower risk than other equity mutual fund schemes. They have the potential to offer 10-12 per cent over 10 years. Stagger your investments over six to 12 months.
