Synopsis

The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20 covers 13 Mumbai constituencies including notable candidates like Piyush Goyal, Ujjwal Nikam, and Arvind Sawant. Maharashtra with 48 parliamentary seats, including Mumbai North, is a battleground for the Mahayuti coalition and Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region adds Bhiwandi and Palghar to the mix.

The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections is scheduled for Monday, May 20, with voters in 13 constituencies across Mumbai preparing to cast their ballots.

This phase includes key constituencies like Mumbai North, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai South, Kalyan, and Thane.

Notable candidates in this phase include:

  • Union Minister Piyush Goyal (BJP) contesting from Mumbai North
  • Ujjwal Nikam (BJP) from Mumbai North-Central
  • Sitting MP Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena UBT) from Mumbai South
  • Rahul Shewale (Shiv Sena) in Mumbai South
  • Ravindra Waikar (Shiv Sena) in Mumbai North-West
  • Sanjay Dina Patil (Shiv Sena UBT) and Mihir Kotecha (BJP) in Mumbai North-East.
  • Dr. Shrikant Shinde (Shiv Sena) competes against Vaishali Darekar-Rane (Shiv Sena UBT) in Kalyan
  • Rajan Baburao Vichare (Shiv Sena UBT) is up against Naresh Mhaske (Shiv Sena) in Thane
Maharashtra, with 48 parliamentary seats, holds the second-highest number of Lok Sabha constituencies in the country. Mumbai alone accounts for six of these seats, including Mumbai North, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South, and Mumbai South-Central.

The neighboring Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) adds four more constituencies: Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, and Palghar.

The elections will see two major alliances in contention. The ruling Mahayuti coalition - the BJP, NCP (Ajit Pawar), and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) - goes up against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress.
