Three asteroids hurtling towards Earth. Will they collide with it and bring catastrophe? This is what NASA has said

NYT News Service

Synopsis

The first asteroid is estimated to have a 1-in-11 million chance of hitting the Earth on October 3, 2024. It is around 340 meters in size and so can not create havoc. The other asteroid has a bigger collision probability. But it is just like a small rock, around three meters or 10 feet in size.

If media reports are to be believed, three asteroids of different sizes, at least two of them considerably big, are hurtling towards the Earth and may collide with it at a high speed. 'Daily Star' has reported that one of them may collide with the planet in October, while the other may hit it in December this year. Scientists have lost track of another one and can not say what will happen.

Will collision bring catastrophe?

Will this collision bring catastrophe to the Earth and the planet be hit hard creating havoc for its residents? The first asteroid is estimated to have a 1-in-11 million chance of hitting the Earth on October 3, 2024. It is around 340 meters or 1,115 feet in size and can not create havoc.

NASA rules out devastation

To the satisfaction of most of us, a NASA spokesperson has ruled out any major catastrophe. Talking to the Evening Standard, he said, "There are no known asteroid impact threats to Earth at any time in the next century. NASA and its partners diligently watch the skies to find, track, and categorize asteroids and near-Earth objects, including those that may come close to Earth."

Small rock not to cause damage to Earth

The other asteroid has a bigger collision probability. It has a 1-in-430 chance of colliding with the Earth on December 17, two years after it was first observed by space watchers. But it is just like a small rock, around three meters or 10 feet in size. It may explode as a bright fireball and cause no damage if it did enter Earth’s atmosphere.

Micro-asteroid

NASA has also said that another micro-asteroid, about six meters or 20ft in size will approach the earth for the second time this year after it came close in February. It poses no threat as it has no probability of hitting the Earth.

An asteroid is a small rocky object that orbits the sun. Scientists have said that they are remnants from the early formation of the solar system.
