- Sachin Tendulkar had developed a knack for batting since a young age. He made his international cricket debut at the age of 16 in a Test match that India played against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989
- He also made his ODI debut against Pakistan in December 1989
- He soon gained recognition as a top-order batsman, with his first ODI century coming in 1994 against Australia
- He was made the skipper of India’s national side in 1996, at the age of 23
- During the 1996 World Cup, he became the highest scorer with 523 runs
- Tendulkar was honoured with the much-coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1998
- In 2002, he surpassed Sir Don Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries
- Though India lost the finals to Australia, Tendulkar was named the man of the series in the 2003 World Cup for his contribution of 673 runs
- He became the first international cricketer to score 15,000 runs in ODIs in 2007
- Tendulkar joined the IPL team Mumbai Indians in its debut season in 2008
- In 2010, he became the first to score a double ton (200 runs) in an ODI
- He also won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2010
- Tendulkar scored 482 runs during the 2011 World Cup. Though he couldn’t score much in the final against Sri Lanka, India won the match and lifted the World Cup after 28 years, at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai

- In 2014, he was honoured with the highest civilian award of India -- the Bharat Ratna -- and also became the first sportsperson to receive the honour
