- Yogi Adityanath was born Ajay Singh Bisht to Rajput parents in Panchoor village of Pauri region in Uttarakhand. His father was a range officer in the forest department
- He has done BSc in Maths from HNB Garhwal University. He was actively involved with the RSS from a young age and also happened to be a full-timer in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad
- He renounced his family at the age of 21 to become a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, then the head priest of Gorakhpur's Gorakhnath Math
- In the years that followed, Adityanath trained as a sanyasi, protecting cows, learning Vedic texts, and emerging, in less than five years since he was co-opted, as his guru’s most beloved disciple
- Yogi’s tryst with politics began in 1996 when he was named in charge of managing the election campaign for Mahant Avaidyanath. In 1998, when Avaidyanath retired from active politics, he declared Yogi as his heir apparent, and also the nominee for the next Lok Sabha polls
- In 1998, when he was just 26, Yogi Adityanath became the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha, going on to win successive terms in 1999, 2004, 2009, and in 2014 from the Gorakhpur seat in UP
- He was one of the more active and vocal members of the Lok Sabha. He has asked 284 questions in the Lok Sabha, way above the average of 180, and participated in more debates (56) than most others. His attendance was 77 per cent
- He was very vocal on establishing a permanent bench of the Allahabad High Court at Gorakhpur and introduced a Bill in this regard in the Lok Sabha
- In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the BJP swept to power with 312 seats, and Yogi Adityanath was given the charge to head the state. In March, he was sworn-in as the 21st Chief Minister of the state

- His law and order drive in the state has been appreciated as well as criticised too
- He made many changes in UP's industrial policies to generate employment. Under his leadership, UP has attracted investments from several industrial groups in towns like Noida, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Hapur, Aligarh, Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, Bulandshahr and Saharanpur
- He was instrumental in luring Samsung to build the world's largest mobile manufacturing unit in Noida
- A popular leader in the state, he commands a giant following in eastern UP and is known for his ability to attract eyeballs with his fiery speech
- He is the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple, the centre of the centuries-old Gorakhpur Shaivite sect. During elections, the saffron-clad monk is in demand for campaigning particularly in states where the 'Nath Panth' has adherents
- In 2002, he set up the Hindu Yuva Vahini whose volunteers were known to use strong-arm tactics in cow-protection drives and in their attempts to curtail “love jihad”. The outfit's actions drew criticism from many quarters
- In 2005, Yogi led a purification drive — Ghar Wapasi — under which many “returned” to Hinduism. Yogi landed in jail for his acts. He faced charges ranging from attempt to murder to defiling places of worship, rioting with deadly weapons and criminal intimidation
- In September 2008, Yogi survived a murderous attack in Azamgarh when he was going to attend a rally
- In 2020, the World Health Organization “praised” the Uttar Pradesh government for its COVID-19 management strategy, terming it as a good example for other states to follow. However, in April-May 2021, Yogi faced criticism on the mismanagement in the handling of the second wave of pandemic
