8. Alert: New COVID variant in town
What
  • The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the new COVID variant, KP.3, is now responsible for more than 25% of cases in the US.
  • The variant is overtaking the previously dominant JN.1 variant.
Offshoot
  • KP.3 is a "sublineage of the JN.1 lineage,” which comes from the Omicron variant, said CDC spokesperson Rosa Norman.
  • Experts say vaccines do protect against the KP.3 variant.
Symptoms
  • Can range from mild to severe.
  • Common symptoms include fever, dry cough, and fatigue, followed by joint pain, headaches, and a sore throat.
  • Loss of taste or smell, which is reported by many patients, can be a distinguishing feature of the virus.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are also observed.
  • Some individuals can also experience skin manifestations, including rashes and discoloration of fingers or toes.
  • While some patients may remain asymptomatic, others can develop life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure.
  • High-risk groups, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and compromised immune systems, are more likely to develop severe symptoms and complications.
Prevention
  • Early detection, isolation, testing, vaccination, and adherence to public health measures are vital in managing the outbreak.
  • Individual efforts include wearing masks, physical distancing, and washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid large gatherings and poorly ventilated areas.
Also
  • A recent investigation by Reuters revealed that the US military launched a clandestine programme in the Philippines during the pandemic to discredit China.
  • The report states that the operation aimed to create distrust about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines and other aid that China was supplying.
  • The US used at least 300 social media accounts to criticise face masks, test kits and the vaccine, Sinovac, found Reuters. More here
