AGRA: A sub-inspector was arrested and sent to jail and an inspector remained at large on Wednesday, a day after CM Yogi Adityanath ordered strict action against the police officers accused of torturing two brothers and demanding a bribe, "driving the duo to kill themselves".
Police arrested and jailed Sadabad SI Hariom Agnihotri from Hathras while raids continued to locate SHO inspector Mukesh Kumar.
DCP (Agra West) Sonam Kumar said, "The accused SI has been jailed following court orders. Multiple teams are working to apprehend the absconding inspector."
Hathras SP Nipun Agarwal had earlier suspended the two after home guard Pramod Singh, 50, and his brother Sanjay Singh, 45, from Roopdhanoo village, were found hanging from trees on Saturday and Monday. In a suicide note tied to his wrist, Pramod wrote Kumar and Agnihotri tortured him and demanded Rs 1 lakh to drop a case. The brothers' family also accused the officers of custodial torture and extortion.
Sanjay was allegedly detained and beaten by Sadabad police after his brother-in-law eloped with a minor girl. His family claimed he was tortured and extorted for money. Released after paying Rs 10,000, he was threatened with re-arrest if the remaining Rs 90,000 was not paid.
Pramod's suicide note revealed ongoing police pressure despite his election duty from 14 April to 2 June. "I am taking this step because I cannot tolerate the pressure," the note read. His wife, Rajni Singh, alleged the police picked up her husband and elder brother after Sanjay's suicide but released them with a warning not to file a complaint.
The village remained tense with a heavy police presence as officers monitored the family and senior officials tried to console them. The incident sparked outrage, prompting the police to ensure the family's security and prevent any unrest.
