BENGALURU: Having felt the heat this summer with many parts of the city reeling under severe water shortage, BBMP has decided to construct 250 percolation pits and recharge a significant number of its borewells in parks.
The horticulture wing’s proposal to float tenders for the construction of such pits was recently approved by BBMP. The project will cost at least Rs 2.5 crore.
Chandrashekhar MR, deputy director of horticulture (BBMP), told TOI that the civic body has given administrative approval to float the tenders.
The horticulture department will implement the project at BBMP parks with two types of rainwater harvesting systems.
The Palike will establish percolation pits and also adopt borewell-recharge methods. “Rainwater harvesting will push up the groundwater table and enable the deep roots of trees to get sufficient water from these structures. We prefer to recharge borewells situated in the parks to rejuvenate them,” he said.
With Bengaluru facing a severe water crisis in March and April this year, CM Siddaramaiah had admitted the city faces a shortage of 500 MLD (million litres per day) of potable water.
