BENGALURU: Areas coming under BBMP have reported the highest number of dengue positive cases — 1563 — in the state in the first six months of the year. The entire state reported a total of 4,624 cases between Jan 1 and June 30 this year.
Data from the department of health and family welfare revealed that Chikkamagaluru district had the second highest prevalence of dengue, reporting 491 confirmed cases during the same period.
Mysuru and Haveri had the third and fourth highest number of positive cases at 479 and 451 respectively.
Addressing the alarm in Chikkamagaluru, the department officials stated, “There is an 84% increase in serum sample tests for dengue in the district.”
To tackle the situation in Chikkamagaluru, the health department said separate dengue wards of 50 beds each have been identified for male and female patients to manage the cases, while a 10-bed ward has been identified for children.
The department confirmed that paracetamol tablets and IV fluids are sufficiently available to treat dengue in a timely manner,
“For suspected dengue cases, treatment is given as per the guidelines in the district hospitals and serum samples are sent to district public health laboratory for confirmation,” an official stated. While there were reports of overcrowding at the district hospital, the department cited the new OPD block being constructed. “OPD registrations will happen smoothly in 15-20 days, once the work concludes,” the official said.
Of the two suspected dengue deaths reported in Haveri district, only one was confirmed as due to the vector-borne disease. This was revealed by the state-level vector-borne disease death audit committee.
The dengue patient, a 10-year-old boy from Tadasa village, Byadagi taluk, died on April 19 at KIMS, Hubballi. The boy was admitted to the hospital on April 17.
