BENGALURU: The police custody of MLC Suraj Revanna, arrested by CID for allegedly sexually assaulting a man, has been extended by two days.
CID officers produced Suraj before a city court on Monday afternoon as his eight-day police custody ended. The prosecution requested the court to extend the police custody by six days but the judge granted it till July 3.
The state govt had appointed Ashok Naik and BN Jagadeesh as special public prosecutors for the case.
According to sources, police have already subjected Suraj to the main medical test to find out if he was involved in sexual activity with the complainant. Naik sought the extension of his custody, saying the CID officers have to collect his voice samples to compare them with the call recordings allegedly involving him and the complainant.
Naik also told the court that police have to collect his hair samples for forensic analysis. Police said they found several strands of hair during the mahazar in a farmhouse.
An officer said, "Suraj has been denying the charges. It is for us now to prove if the act was consensual or forcible or if there was no sexual assault on the complainant at all."
Meanwhile, Suraj's advocate filed a bail petition before the court. The court was told that there is no equivalent of IPC section 377 under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In the petition, they said since there is no equivalent section, Suraj should be granted bail. CID sleuths say the case was registered on June 22, well before BNS came into force. If Suraj is remanded in judicial custody after July 3, police are likely to seek his police custody for a second case registered against him. "We will take him into police custody in the second case on a body warrant," a senior officer said.
