BHUBANESWAR: Authorities have closed a median opening on the new six-lane road between Hatiasuni and Bharatpur in the city, following frequent accidents at the spot which also killed one person in October last year.
The median opening on the 120-metre wide road led commuters to drive on the wrong side resulting in chances of accidents. Locals said minor accidents were occurring daily at the spot due to lack of safety measures.
A scooterist was killed while another sustained injuries after a speeding car hit their two-wheeler at the spot on October 2 last year.
The duo were travelling on the wrong side of the road using the median opening, which has been now closed.
“The median opening was in a wrong spot. Anyone coming from the Hatiasuni side and wanting to go towards Buddha Jayanti Park had no other option than to take the median cut and end up driving on the wrong side of the road,” Sailashree Vihar resident Vimal Hota said.
Authorities have created a new median opening just a few metres from the spot to provide safe passage to commuters, especially those coming from Hatiasuni side and wanting to go towards Buddha Jayanti Park.
BMC mayor Sulochana Das said after consultation with local residents and city police, a joint survey was conducted at the spot and the earlier median cut was closed. “The new road was constructed to lighten the traffic load on the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road. We are concerned about their safety and are making rectifications on the new road accordingly,” she said.
