AMRITSAR: Amritsar deputy commissioner (DC) Ghyansham Thori will decide on Wednesday regarding the status of the application of MP-elect Amritpal Singh for temporary release from jail for administering oath of Parliament.
Amritpal, a Khalistan advocate and chief of Waris Punjab De, is at present imprisoned in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act.
Thori said no decision had been taken on the status of Amritpal’s application. “By tomorrow, we may take a decision,” he said.
He added the Punjab govt had authorised the DC to decide on the application.
Rajdev Singh, one of the legal counsels of Amritpal, said the Khadoor Sahib MP-elect could take oath within 60 days from June 25 and that it was the binding duty of the Speaker of Lok Sabha to ensure this.
He said the ongoing session of Lok Sabha will conclude on July 3, suggesting that arrangements could be made for Amritpal to be brought into custody and sworn in a private chamber.
Khalsa informed that the letter for temporary release was sent by Amritpal to the DC of Amritsar through the superintendent of Dibrugarh jail, which was received by Amritsar DC on June 9.
