Cops suspect 27-year-old woman’s death ‘honour killing’, book father

SIRSA: Suspecting the two-week-old death of a 27-year-old woman to be a case of honour killing, the Sirsa Sadar police on Wednesday booked her father. The woman, Sarvjit Kaur, died on the night between June 2 and 3 at Nezadela Kalan village, about 9 kilometres from this city.
Sarvjit’s family had cremated her without an autopsy and in the presence of many villagers.Right to Information (RTI) activist Kartar Singh had filed this police complaint. Sirsa police spokesperson Surjeet Singh said the woman’s father, Deshraj ‘Jagdish’, had been charged under sections 302 and 201 of the IPC, but will be arrested after investigation.
Police have seized all the mobile phones of Deshraj’s family to check their call details. In the initial police interrogation, the family has claimed that on the stormy night of June 2, they were moving stuff inside to clear the roof when Sarvjit fell off the bed and died of heart attack as they held her. They cremated the body the next day “without finding any need for autopsy”.
Complainant Kartar Singh said Sarvjit’s mother was from his village, Keshupura, so he had come to know that Sarvjit wanted to marry someone with little land, and that was against the wishes of her family. He claimed that Sarvjit had died under suspicious circumstances, and 20 people he had talked to all had ahunch that it was murder.
