CHANDIGARH: After slight relief from the soaring temperature and heat wave, Chandigarh recorded the hottest day in May since the year 2002 on Sunday, when maximum temperature reached 44.5 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that maximum temperature will reach 45 degrees Celsius in the coming week and has issued an orange alert for heat wave to severe heat wave.
IMD officials said that on Sunday, minimum temperature was recorded at 25.9 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degrees Celsius less than the level recorded on Saturday while maximum temperature was recorded at 44.5 degree Celsius, four degrees above normal and highest recorded in May since 2002. Temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius was also recorded on May 17.
The heat wave and dry weather gave residents a tough time. IMD officials said that fluctuations in minimum temperature were observed in the last one week and temperature crossed the 31 degrees mark thrice last week, leading to warmer nights.
In an advisory for city residents and farmers, IMD officials advised them to stay hydrated and avoid heat exposure. Farmers were advised to prevent heat stress in crops by irrigating fields in the evening or early morning.
