AMRITSAR: Family members of jailed Amritpal Singh, the MP-elect from Khadoor Sahib, have no idea whether he would be able to take his oath in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
“We have no information of Amritpal taking oath. Our only source of information is the media,” said Amritpal’s father Tarsem Singh.
Amritpal and his nine associates are lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
Recently, their detention under the Act was extended by a year.
Rajdev Singh Khalsa, Amritpal’s lawyer and former MP from Sangrur, said that it is not mandatory for Amritpal to take oath on Tuesday itself. Khalsa said that the protem speaker could be informed of Amritpal’s incarceration, allowing him to take oath within 60 days. Drawing from his own experience, Khalsa said that despite being elected as an MP, he had taken his oath a month later due to prior commitments.
On Feb 23, 2023, Amritpal, president of Waris Punjab De and a self-styled religious preacher, led a mob and wrested control of Ajnala police station while taking cover of Sikh holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib and gave an ultimatum for the release of one of his colleagues arrested by the police. As many as eight policemen, including DSP, were injured in the incident. After two months. Amritpal surrendered on April 23, 2023, and was transferred to Dibrugarh jail.

Contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the jail, Amritpal defeated Shiromani Akali Dal’s Virsa Singh Valtoha, Aam Aadmi Party’s cabinet minister Laljit Singh Bhullar and Congress party’s Kulbir Singh Zeera to win the Khadoor Sahib seat.
