Central metro station in Chennai will soon feature a book park with a vast collection of Tamil and English books, offering comfortable seating and over 40 stalls selling books to its daily footfall of up to three lakh passengers.
CHENNAI: Soon, commuters can pick up a book and read at Central metro station as it will have a book park with a huge collection of Tamil and English books. The book park will have comfortable seats and house more than 40 stalls which will display and sell books.
Central metro station is one of the busiest metro stations with a daily footfall of up to three lakh passengers.

“Based on the reception at Central metro station, we may open another book park at AG-DMS metro station as well,” said K Elambahavath, director of public libraries.
The park also will have a common counter to purchase books. It may either come up in the metro ticketing area or in the food court corridor of the station in a 11,000sqft to 16,000sqft area. TN has approved the proposal and it will be operated by Tamil Nadu Textbooks and Educational Services Corporation.
Directorate of public libraries is also planning to replace furniture in libraries to give readers a comfortable reading experience.
It also launched an exclusive portal for procuring books for 4,500 public libraries. According to the new initiative, readers and librarians of public libraries are involved in selecting books. They will select books based on the list given by publishers and reviewed by experts. Libraries department will procure books based on demand. Frequency of purchasing books has been made quarterly instead of annually.
