Kallakurichi Hooch tragedy toll rises to 58

KALLAKURICHI: The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rose to 58 on Monday with 111 being treated at Kallkurichi GH, 29 at Salem GH, 11 at Jipmer, Puducherry and four at Villupuram GH. The condition of 16 patients is said to be critical. Six patients in Jipmer and two from a private hospital were discharged. The dead include 32 at Kallakurichi GH, 19 at Salem GH, 4 at Villupuram GH and 3 at Jipmer.
A total of 221 people from Karunapuram and neighbouring regions had been hospitalized after consuming illicit liquor on June 18 and 19.
Separately, family members of Ilayaraja and Jayamurugan who developed complications after consuming hooch at Karunapuram on June 18 and died at home have appealed to the district administration to provide ₹10 lakh compensation. The CBCID arrested three more people involved in the illicit liquor trade taking the number of people arrested to 10.
