CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu govt has announced an increase in intake in govt arts and science colleges for 2024-25 academic year in view of the demand.
Replying to the debate on demand for grants in the assembly on Monday, higher education minister K Ponmudy said, “The intake in govt-aided colleges and private colleges will be increased by 15% and 10% respectively.” This year govt arts and science colleges have received more than two lakh applications for one lakh seats.
The higher education department will also build rooms for female students to freshen up in all govt arts and science colleges at the cost of 8.5crore.
Ponmudy also announced establishing AI and robotics labs in three govt engineering colleges in Coimbatore, Salem and Bargur at the cost of 3crore. Separate labs for electric vehicle technology, internet of things (IoT) will be established in five engineering colleges at the cost of 5crore.
He said more people would be given intensive coaching for competitive examinations such as GATE, IES, CAT, GMAT, GRE, IELTS and TOEFL. And, new diploma courses would be introduced in special institutes of printing technology, textile technology, chemical technology and leather technology.
