CHENNAI: A few coaches of Cheran Express, bound for Coimbatore from Chennai Central, were detached when the train was on the move via Tiruvallur on Saturday night.
No injuries were reported. Authorities concerned have ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The incident happened around 10.40pm when the train was crossing Tiruvallur railway station at a speed of 60km per hour.
The assistant loco pilot noticed the sudden pressure drop and alerted the train manager. They found out that nearly 14 coaches including AC cars after S7 coach were detached from the train. The train was immediately stopped.
Inspection revealed that disengagement happened due to breakage of knuckle in the coupling mechanism of S8 coach.
The trains were diverted via other tracks until the technicians reached the spot for on Chennai Central. The coupling was replaced and the coaches were attached back to the train around 1pm.
The train resumed the journey around 1.30 pm after a delay of nearly three hours. The divisional railway manager in a tweet said that every incident of train parting is investigated to find out the root cause and also to fix accountability, wherever required. “An inquiry is being ordered and the outcome of the findings will then be clear,” read the tweet.

Since the parting took place at lower speed of 60kmph, a major mishap was averted. The train was slowed down since it was entering the railway station premises, said railway sources. Also, since the incident happened after 10.30pm, the frequency of suburban trains was lesser and the trains were diverted via other tracks.
