CHENNAI: Two bike riders were killed and four other youngsters were seriously injured in a 'mysterious' accident that took place on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) on Saturday evening. With one of the cameras in the area not working, police are struggling to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Speculation is rife about the nature of the accident. While some police sources suspect it to be a case of careless bike racing, there are also rumours of a hit-and-run case.
Senior police officers, however, have confirmed the involvement of an autorickshaw in the accident.
According to Red Hills traffic investigation police, they received information about the accident near Vazhuthigaimedu village on the ORR on Saturday evening. They rushed to the spot and transported the four injured to the hospital, all of whom were unconsciousness. The bodies were sent to the government hospital for a post-mortem.
The deceased were identified as Mani, 25, of Kundrathur, and Sam, 26. The injured were Mohana Krishnan, 30, of Besant Nagar; Marimuthu, 22, of Kannagi Nagar; Jasper, 20, of Mangadu. The identity of the fourth person, who is in coma, is yet to be ascertained.
“All six don't know each other, nor do their relatives. We don't know why they came there. There are CCTV cameras every two km on the stretch. However, a few of them were not working on Saturday night. We are checking the other cameras on ORR to find out where they came from. We will know the exact details in a day or two,” said a senior police officer who is investigating the case.
Police sources said they have recovered a piece of metal near the accident spot. “We suspect that this could also be a hit-and-run case involving a red car. We can confirm this only after the injured people are ready to elaborate,” said an investigating officer.
Local residents point out that youngsters performing bike stunts are common on the stretch. “Earlier, this used to be done on the Sholavaram airstrip. Now the ORR is their favorite spot. This could have been one such team,” said a resident.
A probe is on.
