COIMBATORE: Corporation Middle School at Masakalipalayam in Coimbatore has formed a band, a first for corporation schools in the city.
This band was formed through CSR (corporate social responsibility) contributions.
The school primarily serves students from lower middle-class families.
Currently, the school has 602 students, ranging from LKG to class VIII.
Only 57 of these students have opted for the Tamil medium while the majority are studying in the English medium.
“We are selecting students from classes VI to VIII to be part of the band. These students receive practice sessions for at least two to three hours a week to enhance their band performance skills. The band has already showcased their talent during Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. On such occasions, they perform at the Corporation Main Office at Town Hall, where they have the honour of giving the guard of honour to the respective corporation commissioner,” said S Ravi, a secondary grade teacher.

P Sakthivel, another secondary grade teacher at Corporation Middle School, expressed pride in the students' talents. "The children are very talented. We, as teachers, are working together to bring out the talents of the school children," he said.
He highlighted that the school offers 12 extracurricular activities, demonstrating a strong commitment to the students' overall development.
“We have received special permission from the city municipal corporation to allow students to wear sports uniforms on every Friday, fostering a sense of unity and school spirit. Despite being a corporation school, it is competing with private schools, aiming at providing similar or even superior opportunities for its students,” said Sakthivel.
Sakthivel mentioned the need for continued support from various sectors to further develop their band. "We are expecting support from various sectors to make our band one of the best bands in Coimbatore city," he said.
The school was established by the Tamil Nadu government in 1956. It has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with enrollment numbers increasing from 105 students in 2017 to 602 students today.

However, the school faces challenges, such as the lack of a sports ground. This limitation impacts the students' ability to engage in outdoor sports and physical activities.
