Highway robbery bid near Coimbatore: Seven more arrested
COIMBATORE: Madukkarai police in Coimbatore district on Friday arrested seven more people in connection with a robbery attempt and attack on a Kerala-bound car on the Salem – Kochi National Highway in the early hours of June 14.
The arrested people were identified as M Jithin, 23, S Harishkumar, 28, R Jinu, 30, M Neymar alias Aneesh, 38, N Nandakumar, 31, R Rajeev, 35 and C Jithish, 32.
All hail from Palakkad district in Kerala.
Police had earlier arrested K Sivadas, 29, Ramesh Babu, 27, M Vishnu, 28, of Chittur in Kerala and M Ajay from Nallepilly 16.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused targeted a car belonging to Siddique, suspecting that it would have been carrying a large sum of hawala money. The gang received information of a car carrying hawala money and targeted the wrong vehicle.
Siddique and three others were returning to Kerala from Bengaluru after purchasing computers and peripherals.
The gang members, who came in three cars, intercepted Siddique’s car and broke its windshield near Madukkarai toll plaza. However, Siddique sped away in the car and sought police help.
The video of the robbery attempt went viral in social media.
