Stop Tirunelveli weekly spl train at Periyanaickenpalayam: Commuters
Coimbatore: The Periyanaickenpalayam Train Passengers’ Welfare Association has requested the Southern Railway to provide a stoppage for Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli weekly special train at Periyanaickenpalayam station.
Established in 1873, Periyanaickenpalayam railway station is one of the oldest stations in the state. Located between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, this station records more than 1,000 footfalls daily.
In a letter to the general manager of Southern Railway, association secretary N Abinaya said stopping the Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli weekly special train (no.
06029) at Periyanaickenpalayam station would be very useful for the commuters traveling to southern districts of TN.
Pointing out that the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore MEMU train (no. 06009), which departs from Mettupalayam at 8.20am daily, and the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam MEMU train (no. 06010), which departs from Coimbatore at 5.55pm daily, were overcrowded every day, she urged the railway to replace the eight-car MEMU with a 12-car MEMU.
“Presently, these MEMU trains halt at Periyanaickenpalayam station for only one minute. The stoppage time for all trains at this station should be increased to two minutes,” Abinaya said.
She also sought more seating arrangements with a shelter at the station, as the number of passengers using it to board trains have been on the rise. “It also should be converted into a crossing station with an additional platform.”
