Remand prisoner attempts suicide in Coimbatore Central Prison
COIMBATORE: A remand prisoner inflicted injuries on his chest and abdomen with a broken CFL bulb in the Coimbatore Central Prison on Monday afternoon.
Race Course police registered a case against remand prisoner C Dhanasekar alias Ennore Dhanasekaran, 41, for attempting suicide, not allowing the prison warders to discharge their duties and criminally intimidating them.
The case was registered based on a complaint filed by jailor S Sivarasan.
In the complaint, the jailor stated that Dhanasekar, a native of Thiruverumbur in Trichy, was facing a ganga case at Ennore police station in 2021. He was lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison where he was involved in a fight with warders. So, he was shifted to the Coimbatore Central Prison on April 28, 2024.
Ennore police initially planned to produce him before a judicial magistrate court for trial on Tuesday (July 2). Later, they decided to produce him before the judicial officers through videoconferencing.
Dhanasekaran came to know about this on Monday afternoon when he was at the second shutter of the yoga centre in the high security block of the Coimbatore Central Prison. He took a broken CFL bulb and attempted suicide by inflicting self-injuries on his chest and abdomen.
He uttered foul words against warders and did not allow them to be near him. He threatened them with dire consequences.
The remand prisoner sustained minor injuries and was taken to the prison hospital where he was treated. He was lodged in the high security block of the prison in the evening.
Police said Dhanasekaran was facing around 30 cases, including ganja, robbery and assault cases, in various parts of Tamil Nadu. He was facing more than 10 cases in Ennore police station jurisdiction alone.
