Mapusa fatal assault case: Police arrest main accused in Sawantwadi
Panaji: Days after a man who was brutally assaulted in Mapusa on May 30 succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, police arrested the main accused in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra.
North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said that police conducted searches at six different locations in Goa and Maharashtra for Ramkrishna alias RK Bhalekar, 32, a resident of Laxminagar, housing board, Mapusa, before finally arresting him.
Kaushal said that Bhalekar has two prior criminal cases against him.
The victim, Ahmed Devdi from Laxminagar, and another individual, Sandesh Salkar, 28, from Moira, had allegedly been attacked by a group of seven people on May 30. The accused persons attacked them with iron rods. Devdi sustained severe head injuries, and was admitted to GMC, Bambolim, where he died on Tuesday.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that it was personal enmity, but we are looking at all aspects. Since we have arrested Bhalekar, we will be interrogating him in detail to know exactly what the reasons for the attack were,” Kaushal said. “If we get credible information about anyone else (involved in the attack), we will take required action.”
Earlier, Mapusa police had arrested six persons, but Bhalekar was absconding. The accused persons were initially booked for assault, however, following Devdi’s death, police added murder charges against all of them. The other accused persons arrested are Manthan Chari, Shridhar Killedar, Abhishekh Pujari, Sharanbasu Gaikwad, Nagraj Pujari, and Boresh Pujari.
