SILCHAR: The district transport office in Cachar has intensified its crackdown on drink driving, resulting in the suspension of 17 driving licences in June.
This action aligns with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s appeal to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, using mobile phones while driving and riding without helmets.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DTO said the transport department suspended the licences of individuals flouting the aforementioned regulations.
Ramesh Shyam, the district transport officer (Cachar), said the drive aims to reduce road fatalities caused by inebriated drivers.
He said a substantial number of driving licences were suspended in the first six months of the year, with June seeing a significant drop in such offences due to the crackdown.
He added that licences were also suspended for using mobile phones while driving and not adhering to helmet and seatbelt regulations during the same period.
