AIZAWL: Three members of a family, including a 4-year-old girl, died due to massive landslides triggered by heavy rain in the Zemabawk locality of northern Aizawl city on Tuesday morning.
The victims, identified as Isak Chhangte (32), his wife Lalrinthari (25), and their daughter Abigail Lalchhanhimi (4), were buried alive under thick mud when their home was swept away by the landslide.
The incident occurred around 5:30 am and their bodies were recovered by local volunteers at approximately 10:30 am. Changte's parents, who were in the same home, managed to escape unharmed.
In the nearby Zuangtui neighborhood, three buildings housing four families were also completely destroyed by landslides. Apart from a girl who sustained minor injuries while evacuating their home, no loss of life was reported in this incident. Three families had already vacated their homes earlier.
Authorities have evacuated at least 19 families to safer locations in the Salem neighborhood of southern Aizawl city. This locality had previously experienced the tragic loss of three family members during Cyclone Remal on May 27-28, when their house was completely destroyed by mudslides.
In Mamit town, near the Tripura border, occupants of three buildings left their their homes since Monday night due to the area sinking following heavy rain.
The heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage across the state, with numerous roads, including highways, being blocked by massive landslides. Contractors and state public works department personnel are facing challenges in clearing the debris blocking the roads. As of Tuesday evening, several villages and towns remain cut off.
The incessant rain has also disrupted power supply in many parts of the state, including Aizawl. Residents of Aizawl have been facing acute water scarcity since May 27-28, when Cyclone Remal triggered floods that heavily damaged the water pump set on the banks of the Tlawng river near the city. The ongoing rain has impeded repair work on the pump set.
