Assam razes illegal homes of 3 rapists
GUWAHATI: Goalpara district administration in lower Assam on Sunday demolished the houses of three individuals, who are accused of raping two minor girls. However, govt officials maintained that the razed concrete houses were illegally built on encroached land and the demolition was not directly linked to the alleged rape incident. Nevertheless, they acknowledged that the area had metamorphosed into a den of illicit activities.
On May 3, the trio — Dhan Ali Talukdar, Bahar Ali and Rahman Ali — allegedly raped two teenage girls while they were returning home from a Rongjali Baisagu cultural event in Dudhnoi.
Later on May 5, when Hiranmoy Khakhlari, the brother of one of the survivors, confronted the accused, Talukdar’s brother Shekabor Ali, sister Parmina Begum and Ramzan brutally assaulted him. Khakhlari subsequently succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Guwahati.
In addition to Khakhlari’s death, two other individuals sustained injuries in the vicious attack.
On Sunday, the administration assisted by hundreds of police personnel, sprang into action and came with bulldozers at Tangbari village. The officials then razed the houses of the prime accused, Talukdar, his elder brother Shekabor Ali, and sister Parmina Begum, as well as the dwellings of accomplices Bahar Ali, Rahman Ali, and one Ramzan Ali, affecting a total of four families.
Stating that many other families were illegally occupying govt land in Tangabari village, the Dudhnoi circle officer Rananmay Bharadwaj said, “In Tangabari village, many of govt land was encroached upon. So, more eviction drives will follow.”
