Dibrugarh waterlogged for 5th consecutive day
Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh town continues to grapple with severe waterlogging issues for the fifth consecutive day, with no relief in sight from the relentless monsoon rains. The situation worsened on Monday as new areas of the town were inundated due to the incessant downpours. The 22 wards of the town have been submerged in rainwater since June 27, causing widespread disruption to daily life and economic activities in the area.
State disaster management minister Jogen Mohan visited Dibrugarh on Monday to assess the situation and directed officials to take immediate action to mitigate the flooding.
Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi and SP Rakesh Reddy also inspected the waterlogged areas, including Mancotta Road, which has been submerged for the past five days.
The bustling Mancotta Road, a crucial thoroughfare in Dibrugarh, has remained submerged since Thursday, particularly from the Chowkidinghee Clock Tower to Phoolbagan, due to overflowing water from drains. Additionally, vital roads such as the AT Road, RKB Road, HS Road, KC Gogoi Road, Jail Road, Zig Zag Road, Rotary Road, Red Cross Road, Cole Road, VKV Road, Jhalukpara Road, KP Road, PN Road and Convoy Road have experienced waterlogging issues in various sections. The flooding has led to damage to several vehicles navigating the waterlogged streets.
“We are facing a crisis of unprecedented proportion in Dibrugarh town. The overflowing drains and incessant rain have made it nearly impossible to manage the waterlogging effectively. Unless the weather improves, we will continue to face these challenges,” mayor Saikat Patra said.
The mayor admitted that floodwaters from the Brahmaputra River have seeped into Dibrugarh town from the Maijan area, further exacerbating the situation.
The impact of the flooding extended to educational institutions, businesses and govt buildings, with locations such as Dibrugarh Police Reserve, the old SP office, All India Radio office, the Inspector of Schools office, Joint Director of Health office, schools and colleges being affected by waterlogging. Several shops and businesses were forced to temporarily close due to the heavy rain.
In view of the situation, all schools in the Dibrugarh district have been closed since Monday, following an order issued by the inspector of schools.
