Kidnapping accused tries to flee, injured in Silchar police firing

SILCHAR: An accused in a kidnapping case was injured in police firing at Shivpur in Cachar district on Saturday night after he tried to escape from custody, police said on Sunday.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta told media on Sunday that the accused, identified as Md Mannan Ahmed (32) of Binnakandi Grant in Lakhipur, had allegedly kidnapped 19 year-old girl Lakhimoni Rikiason from a tea estate in Binnakandion Saturday.Following this, police carried out an operation and rescued the girl from Sonai on Saturday night. Mannan was also arrested during the operation, Mahatta added, reports BB Goswami.
Around 2am, when Mannan was being taken to the Lakhipur block primary health centre in a police vehicle for a mandatory medical examination, he requested the police to stop the vehicle in Shivpur so that he could attend nature’s call. After the police stopped the vehicle, Mannan punched one of the police official Jasimuddin Laskar and tried fleeing away.
The police team asked him to stop, but he kept running. The police then fired two bullets at his leg, following which he fell to the ground. He was nabbed again and sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment.
