SILCHAR: In two separate operations conducted on Thursday evening and Friday morning, Cachar police seized nearly 2.5 kg of heroin worth Rs 12.5 crore and arrested five persons in this connection.
Based on intelligence, a special operation was conducted on Friday morning at Digorkhal Toll Gate on NH-6, where police recovered 150 soap cases containing suspected heroin weighing about 1.881 kg from a truck coming from Churachandpur in Manipur.
The police apprehended three persons – Ram Muang (30) and Manglallem (33), both residents of Manipur, and Arbil Kumar (30) from Vaishali in Bihar – and seized the drugs from their possession. The estimated black market value of the seized narcotics is about Rs 9.5 crore, according to Numal Mahatta, superintendent of police (SP) of Cachar.
“The narcotics consignment was being illegally transported from Churachandpur in Manipur. Further investigation is ongoing to trace the source of this crime,” the SP added.
In a separate operation on Thursday evening at Katigorah and Salchapra in the district, police apprehended two persons and recovered 50 soap cases suspected to contain heroin, weighing about 561 grams. The prime accused arrested by the police have been identified as Afzal Hussain (35) and Akhtar Hussain (34), both residents of Cachar district. The estimated black market value of these narcotics is about Rs 3 crore. A car used in the illegal transportation was also seized.
